  • Laboratory:
    • Research of new technology
    • Autopsies of aliens
    • Upgrades of equipment
    • Workspace limited

  • Workshop:
    • Production of equipment
    • Workspace limited

  • warehouse:
    • Storage of equipment and/or
    • Alphatron storage

  • Living Quarters:
    • You can't have more employees than livingroom

  • Hangar:
    • Needed for your Aircraft
    • Can only be built on the top most sublevel
    • Gates are on the toplevel

  • Defence:
    • Active and passive defence against UFOs
    • Can only be built on surface

  • Sensor:
    • Detects UFOs within range
    • Detected UFOs stay visible, even when leaving range
    • Can only be built on surface

Depending on the game set, there might be buildings that don't fit in this schema. They will then probably have special story functions and no (or only limited) normal functions. Nevertheless they must be part of this categories. In later versions of the game there might be a possibility to use buildings together with scripting.
